Will Trump Support the Balochistan Freedom Movement?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Washington, Jan 5 (NationPress) A prominent Baloch leader residing in the US has called on President Donald Trump to offer the same support he provided to the Venezuelan people in their fight against dictatorship, urging him to back the people of Balochistan in their quest for freedom. Drawing significant comparisons between the past Venezuelan leadership and the military establishment of Pakistan, Dr. Tara Chand, the president of the Baloch American Congress, expressed his hopes in a post on X. He stated that President Trump “recently aligned himself with the Venezuelan populace against dictatorship” and should “similarly stand by the people of Balochistan in their fight for liberty.”
Chand accused the Pakistani Army Chief, Asim Munir, of engaging in treachery, alleging that he is “selling and mortgaging Balochistan’s vast natural and coastal resources to China and beyond,” akin to how Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro “surrendered his country’s resources to China.” He asserted that Munir is acting as a “double agent,” leveraging Balochistan's resources towards China while misleading the United States.
Furthermore, Chand highlighted the parallels between the Venezuelan regime and the Pakistani military, accusing both of involvement in drug trafficking, human rights violations, and destabilizing the region. He claimed that the Pakistani military exports “radical Islamic extremism beyond their borders,” which he considers a threat to global peace.
Referencing past controversies, he mentioned the discovery of Osama bin Laden in Pakistan, alleging that the military harbored him while continuing to receive US financial aid. Chand added that the security operations in Balochistan have led to daily killings and enforced disappearances, which he condemned as “crimes against humanity.” He insisted that General Munir “must be held accountable and arrested, similar to how dictators in other regions have faced justice.”
“The people of Balochistan deserve justice, freedom, and the autonomy to shape their own future,” he emphasized.
The Baloch American Congress, located in Washington, identifies itself as a registered political organization that fights for the Baloch national cause for self-determination and aims to protect the socio-cultural and political rights of the Baloch diaspora in the US. Chand, who heads the organization, is a former cabinet minister in the Balochistan government.
This appeal arises at a time when there is increased global scrutiny on issues related to human rights, resource management, and US policies towards authoritarian regimes, particularly in light of recent events in Venezuela.
