Have Two Individuals Been Detained in Murshidabad for Alleged Spying for Pakistan?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 22 (NationPress) Two young men have been taken into custody in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal on allegations of spying for Pakistan, as stated by officials on Sunday.
The arrests were made by the Special Task Force (STF) of the West Bengal Police, who also seized multiple mobile phones and SIM cards from these individuals.
According to police sources, one of the suspects, Juhab Sheikh, a resident of Murshidabad, was apprehended days earlier after his suspicious activities were noted during surveillance. During questioning, investigators purportedly uncovered evidence indicating his connections with operatives located in Pakistan.
Following information obtained during the interrogation, another suspect named Suman Sheikh was arrested on Saturday in Berhampore, Murshidabad district. Police reports suggest that both individuals were involved in the trade of selling SIM cards.
The accused allegedly obtained SIM cards using the identification documents of unsuspecting individuals and utilized those numbers to establish WhatsApp accounts. They purportedly shared the one-time passwords (OTPs) generated during the verification process with their contacts in Pakistan, facilitating remote control and management of those accounts.
According to investigating officers, the suspects are believed to have shared OTPs in this manner at least seven times. In exchange, they allegedly received significant payments, which were traced back to their bank accounts.
Officials suspect that the accounts created with these SIM cards may have been employed by Pakistan-based operatives to collect information on individuals in India. Investigators are looking into whether any sensitive information or data was accessed or transmitted via these accounts and if additional individuals were part of this network.
STF cyber experts were instrumental in identifying the alleged operation and monitoring the accused's activities.
Officials noted that central intelligence agencies had previously flagged similar cases involving OTP diversion and the illegal use of SIM cards across various regions in the country. Investigators are also exploring whether the detained individuals had connections with any international terrorist organizations or militant groups.
Further investigations are ongoing.
