Kolkata, July 8 (NationPress) - The West Bengal Police announced on Tuesday that the Special Task Force (STF) has apprehended two individuals suspected of having connections with Pakistan's ISI. Both suspects have been ordered to spend seven days in police custody by a Kolkata lower court, according to officials.
In a statement made on Tuesday afternoon, a police representative confirmed that the arrests occurred in the East Burdwan district early Sunday morning. The suspects were subsequently presented at the city court on Monday without any public disclosure.
The police maintained a level of confidentiality regarding the arrests due to the sensitive nature of the ISI connection, refraining from discussing it until the court's remand was secured.
The accused have been identified as Mukhesh Rajak, a resident of Panagarh in West Burdwan district, and Rakesh Kumar Gupta, a resident of Bhawanipur in South Kolkata.
According to police officials, the duo was allegedly operating as ISI linkmen under the guise of managing a non-governmental organization. Their activities were traced to a rented location in Memari in East Burdwan, where they were arrested.
“We suspect that these individuals are part of a significant espionage network. During their seven days in police custody, investigators will conduct thorough questioning to uncover details about their accomplices involved in the operation,” the police representative noted.
Authorities have already confiscated the mobile devices of the suspects, and the call and chat logs are under examination by investigators to gather further insights.
Investigators are also working to ascertain how long the arrested individuals have been functioning as ISI linkmen and the type of information they may have disseminated to their contacts in Pakistan.
