Gadchiroli (Maharashtra), Dec 20 (NationPress) Two notorious Maoists with a reward of Rs 8 lakhs on their heads surrendered to the Gadchiroli Police, according to an official statement released on Friday.

The individuals who laid down their arms have been identified as Ramsu Durgu Poyam a.k.a. Narsing, 55, hailing from Maharashtra; and Ramesh Shamu Kunjam a.k.a. Govind, 25, from Chhattisgarh.

Poyam has been involved in the insurgency for more than 30 years, while Kunjam has been a rebel for the past five years, stated Neelotpal, the Superintendent of Police in Gadchiroli.

High-ranking police officials such as Ankit Goyal, Ajay Kumar Sharma, Sujit Kumar, and Neelotpal were present, along with their teams, during the surrender.

Poyam held the position of an Area Committee Member, while Kunjam was a Dalam Member, both of whom participated in numerous serious crimes, including murders, encounters with security forces, dacoities, and other offences against the state, as reported by the police.

According to police records, Poyam is wanted for five murders, six encounters, and one dacoity, whereas Kunjam has been implicated in various violent and criminal activities alongside others.

Beginning his journey as a rebel around 32 years ago, Poyam became a member of the Tipagad Dalam in 1992 and subsequently joined the Kakur Dalam, where he undertook various responsibilities including ensuring security for rebels during training camps and serving as a trainer in 2001-2002.

He climbed the ranks to become an ACM in the Kutul and Nelnar dalams before choosing to abandon his violent lifestyle today.

Kunjam was drawn to the Maoist ideology, initially joining as a Militia, then becoming a member of the Chetna Natya Manch, and ultimately joining the Kutul Dalam in 2021 until his surrender on Friday.

Due to their serious crimes, the Maharashtra government had announced a reward of Rs 6 lakh for Poyam and Rs 2 lakhs for Kunjam.

Following their surrender, they will be eligible for all rehabilitation benefits from both the Centre and state governments, amounting to Rs 4,50,000 each, as mentioned by Neelotpal.

In the year 2024, a total of 20 most wanted Maoists have surrendered, contributing to a cumulative total of 680 militants integrated into the social mainstream since 2005, when the government’s policy was initiated.
