Two Scientists from CMFRI Receive Esteemed Recognition from NAAS

Kochi, Dec 28 (NationPress) In acknowledgment of the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute’s (CMFRI) crucial impact on fisheries science, two of its scientists have been recognized by the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS) for their outstanding contributions.

Founded in 1990, NAAS is committed to fostering excellence in agricultural sciences, which includes areas such as crop and animal husbandry, fisheries, agroforestry, and the agriculture-industry interface.

Dr. Eldho Varghese, a senior scientist at CMFRI, has been elected as a NAAS Fellow, while Dr. T.G. Sumithra has been designated as a NAAS Associate. These esteemed recognitions emphasize their vital contributions to agricultural research in their specific areas of expertise.

NAAS Fellowships are granted to distinguished scientists from India and globally for their exceptional contributions to agriculture and related sciences. The Associateship program, created to honor young scientists under 40 years old working in agriculture-related fields in India, showcases emerging talent in this domain.

Dr. Eldho Varghese was acknowledged for his innovative work in statistics, especially in designing experiments for agricultural and fisheries research. His contributions include statistical and ecosystem modeling, fish stock assessment, utilizing deep learning models in marine fisheries research, and developing computational tools for sophisticated data analysis.

Dr. T.G. Sumithra was recognized for her pioneering research in fish health and marine microbiology. Her investigations focus on the marine fish microbiome, fish diseases, and antimicrobial resistance. Her research has resulted in the formulation of guidelines for responsible antibiotic application in aquaculture and the development of eco-friendly technologies for bioethanol production and sustainable fish waste management.

NAAS, as a national organization dedicated to agricultural sciences, acts as a premier platform for agricultural scientists to discuss pressing issues in research, education, and extension. It offers policy recommendations to planners and decision-makers while promoting advanced research across various fields of agricultural sciences.
