Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 28 (NationPress) The chief of the Indian Youth Congress, Uday Bhanu Chib, received bail on Saturday concerning the case linked to the shirtless protest during the AI Impact Summit held in the national capital. The bail was granted by the duty magistrate at the Patiala House Court on a personal bond of Rs 50,000.
Late last night, the Delhi Police Crime Branch submitted a request to the court for a seven-day extension of Chib's police custody remand.
Additional applications were also submitted for the remand of two other individuals involved in the case.
After reviewing the defense’s bail application, the duty magistrate provided Chib with relief.
The court highlighted that the Crime Branch did not present adequate justification for extending the remand.
Upon granting bail, the court mandated Chib to surrender his passport and any electronic devices to the court.
Chib is accused of being the primary conspirator behind organizing an unlawful assembly on February 20 at Bharat Mandapam during the AI Impact Summit and Expo 2026, where slogans were chanted against Prime Minister Modi, allegedly attempting to provoke a riot-like atmosphere.
Furthermore, the police have claimed that Chib, along with co-accused Krishna Hari, Kundan Yadav, Narasimha Yadav, Ajay Kumar Yadav, and others, hindered and assaulted police officers fulfilling their duties.
The arrest memo indicates that he allegedly did not cooperate during the interrogation and failed to provide information about the absconding co-accused and the origin of the T-shirts used in the protest.
Chib was detained after approximately 15 hours of questioning at the Tilak Marg police station regarding the shirtless protest that occurred on the final day of the India AI Impact Summit.
The protest ignited a political controversy, as the BJP criticized it as an effort to damage India’s global reputation, while the Congress Party defended it as a calm demonstration reflecting the youth's concerns.
In the meantime, even Congress' allies within the Opposition INDIA bloc have expressed disapproval of the party's youth wing over the shirtless protest.
