Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhopal/Ujjain, April 3 (NationPress) In a tragic turn of events, the remains of Gurkirat Singh Manocha, a talented young scholar from Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, were returned to his hometown on Friday after his horrific murder in Canada last month.
Gurkirat, the younger son of local entrepreneur Gurjeet Singh Manocha, was enrolled in a Post-Degree Diploma in Business Management at Northern Lights College in Fort St. John, British Columbia. He was brutally assaulted on March 14 by a group of young individuals near Charlie Lake, resulting in serious injuries that led to his premature death.
This shocking occurrence has cast a deep shadow of mourning over the Sikh community in Madhya Pradesh and throughout India. Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav took to social media to express his heartfelt condolences, affirming that the state government is with its citizens in both joyous and sorrowful times.
On his X account, the Chief Minister offered prayers for the departed soul to attain eternal peace and for the family to possess the strength to cope with this overwhelming grief.
The government promptly sought the Centre’s help to facilitate the repatriation of the body.
On Tuesday, the Chief Minister, along with Ujjain MP Anil Firojiya, visited the mourning family at their home in Parshwanath City on Dewas Road.
The leaders paid their respects by laying flowers before Gurkirat’s portrait and offered solace to the distraught relatives.
Earlier, Gurkirat’s father, Gurjeet Singh Manocha, had submitted a formal request to the Chief Minister outlining the family’s wishes. They expressed the desire to conduct the final rites and cremation in Canada, where the tragic incident occurred, before bringing the ashes back to Ujjain for the last ceremonies if Gurkirat’s body could not be returned. To facilitate this, they urgently requested the state government to arrange visas for Gurkirat’s elder brother, Prabhkirat Singh, and his cousin, Saheb Singh. The family also sought financial assistance for air travel costs, hospital bills already incurred in Canada, and other related expenses.
CM Mohan Yadav and MP Anil Firojiya listened with empathy and assured the family of comprehensive support from the state government. They pledged to coordinate swiftly with the relevant Central authorities to expedite the visa process and explore all possible avenues for providing the requested financial aid to bring Gurkirat’s remains back to Ujjain.
