Sahnewal (Punjab), Sep 12 (NationPress) - On Friday, Union Minister B.L. Verma made a visit to Sasrali village within the Sahnewal constituency of Punjab to assess the ongoing flood situation and the initiatives being implemented to safeguard the affected regions.
He examined over 2.5 km of temporary embankments that were constructed with the dedicated efforts of local villagers to protect their farmland and residences.
Present during this inspection were Pritpal Singh Baliawal, BJP spokesperson, and Gagandeep Singh Kaint, District Ludhiana (Rural). During the visit, Pritpal Singh Baliawal provided the minister with an overview of the extensive damage.
He noted that nearly 450 acres of productive agricultural land had been swept away into the Sutlej river, emphasizing that illegal mining in the area was a significant factor contributing to this widespread devastation.
The minister interacted with local residents and farmers, reassuring them of the Central government’s unwavering support.
He stated that under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP-led government has announced an additional relief package of Rs 1,600 crore for Punjab, supplementing the Rs 12,000 crore already allocated through the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).
Furthermore, he promised that if any further assistance is necessary, the Central government is ready to stand with the people of Punjab during this challenging time.
Union Minister Verma also commended the unrelenting efforts of BJP volunteers who have been working tirelessly alongside local residents to provide relief and reinforce embankments. He also distributed flood relief kits to the inhabitants of Sasrali village.
Meanwhile, state Revenue, Rehabilitation and Disaster Management Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian reported that encouragingly, individuals residing in relief camps are gradually returning home, leading to a decrease in operational camps from 111 on September 11 to 100 on September 12.
He mentioned that there has been a notable reduction of 460 inmates in the relief camps, indicating a slow but steady return to normalcy as families come back to their homes. The cumulative number of evacuated individuals has reached 23,340 thus far.
Currently, 4,125 people are still housed in government-run relief camps, down from 4,585 the previous day.
According to district reports, no new affected crop areas have been reported, with the total affected crop area assessed at 192,380 hectares to date, and no additional damage reported in the last 24 hours.
The Cabinet Minister also reported that one person has been reported missing from Jalandhar, while three individuals remain unaccounted for in Pathankot.
