The Governor, hailing from Gujarat, the birthplace of the 'Iron Man' Vallabhbhai Patel, paid homage by laying floral tributes before his portrait during the event, commending his monumental contributions towards unifying and strengthening India.
The Raj Bhavan also hosted the 'Unity Day' oath ceremony, which saw participation from various officials, including the Principal Secretary to the Governor, Navneet Mohan Kothari, Additional Secretary Umashankar Bhargava, along with all officers and employees.
All present recited together: “I solemnly pledge to dedicate myself to preserving the unity, integrity, and security of the nation and to strive to spread this message among fellow countrymen. I take this pledge in the spirit of the unity of my country, made possible by the foresight and actions of Vallabhbhai Patel. I also solemnly resolve to contribute to ensuring the internal security of my country with sincerity.”
In a related event, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav inaugurated the 'Run for Unity' in Bhopal, commemorating National Unity Day, and reminisced about how the freedom fighter earned his title of 'Sardar' during the Bardoli Satyagraha.
“After the Bardoli andolan, Vallabhbhai Patel was known by the title of 'Sardar'. He was a pivotal figure in the Salt March and other freedom movements initiated by Mahatma Gandhi. Vallabhbhai Patel was the backbone of all these movements and played a crucial role in ensuring their success. His contributions remain relevant even today,” Yadav emphasized.
Bardoli, situated in the present-day Surat district of Gujarat, was part of the Bombay presidency during British India. The Bardoli Satyagraha, initiated in 1928, aimed to oppose the increased taxation of 22% imposed on farmers by the British.
