A sharp political confrontation broke out on 8 June after Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav alleged that crores of rupees in donations received at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya had gone missing, prompting Uttar Pradesh ministers and Bharatiya Janata Party leaders to hit back hard, demanding proof and accusing the opposition of deliberately spreading misinformation about a religious institution.

What Akhilesh Yadav Said

On Sunday, Yadav claimed that reports pointed to large-scale irregularities in the handling of offerings at the Ram Mandir, and called on the courts to take suo motu cognisance of the matter. He did not cite a specific source for the figures he referenced. The remarks quickly drew reactions from across the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), with leaders demanding that he produce evidence before levelling such charges against a high-profile religious trust.

UP Ministers Push Back

Uttar Pradesh Minister OP Rajbhar was among the first to respond, questioning whether Yadav had even visited Ayodhya. 'Had he ever even gone to Ayodhya to see where the Ram Mandir entrance is? What proof does he have that any irregularities or theft has taken place?... The government does not even have the information, and suddenly, he claims that he knows everything. These are people who are spreading lies and misleading others; there is nothing else to it,' Rajbhar said.

Minister Sanjay Nishad also criticised the opposition's approach, arguing that allegations should follow investigation rather than precede it. 'Before raising any issue, one should first understand the facts and demand an investigation. An inquiry should be conducted, and only when something is found to be true in that investigation should statements be made. But the Opposition does not demand an investigation; it starts making allegations straight away, as if it were the investigating agency,' Nishad said.

BJP MP Calls for Restraint on Matters of Faith

BJP Member of Parliament Dinesh Sharma urged caution when commenting on issues tied to religious sentiment. He pointed out that Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust general secretary Champat Rai had already addressed the matter. 'People should avoid making allegations that could defame a religious institution without first verifying the facts. No one should make accusations about a place of faith without knowing the truth,' Sharma said.

The Broader Political Context

The dispute adds a fresh layer of political friction around the Ram Temple, which was consecrated in January 2024 and has since attracted enormous footfall and donations. The Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust manages the temple's finances, and its officials have previously stated that all contributions are accounted for. Notably, this is not the first time opposition parties have sought judicial or administrative scrutiny of the trust's financial management, though no formal investigation has been ordered to date.

With the Uttar Pradesh political landscape already charged ahead of upcoming local elections, the row is likely to intensify as both sides dig in — the Samajwadi Party pressing for accountability and the NDA framing the allegations as an attack on Hindu faith.
