New Delhi, Feb 10 (NationPress) A significant uproar occurred in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday as members from both the opposition and treasury benches attempted to disrupt the proceedings concerning allegations of coercion related to the forthcoming Telangana municipal elections, set for Wednesday.

BJP MP T. Lakshman from Uttar Pradesh raised a grave issue, asserting that a tribal candidate from Telangana had taken his own life after allegedly being coerced by a state minister to withdraw his nomination for the elections.

Lakshman accused the ruling party of applying undue pressure on the candidate, culminating in this tragic event just one day before the urban local body elections. Elections are set to take place across 123 local bodies in Telangana, including seven municipal corporations and 116 municipalities.

Members of the Upper House reacted swiftly, protesting and demanding an immediate discussion during zero hour.

Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan intervened, noting that the matter could not be addressed during zero hour as all issues are of importance in the House.

He reassured Lakshman that time would be allocated for a detailed discussion after Question Hour, and urged members to maintain decorum.

In a separate appeal, BJD Rajya Sabha MP Sulata Deo from Odisha highlighted the need for animal welfare during her intervention.

She advocated for dedicated ambulances and an increase in veterinary hospitals across every district of the state, stating that animal health is often neglected compared to human healthcare.

"The cow is our mother," Deo emphasized, insisting that society cannot forsake injured animals like cows on the roads post-accidents.

Her appeal underscored the urgent need for improved infrastructure to care for and protect both stray and domestic animals, reflecting escalating concerns regarding animal cruelty and neglect.

Meanwhile, both Houses of Parliament are preparing for a crucial general discussion on the Union Budget for 2026-27. The Rajya Sabha is expected to continue deliberations on the budget previously presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. This session is anticipated to feature debates on fiscal priorities amidst ongoing political tensions.

Point of View

This incident reflects the ongoing struggles within the political landscape of India, where allegations of coercion and pressure tactics are increasingly coming to the forefront.
