Did Telangana BJP Protest Over Candidate’s Suicide Point to Congress Blame?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, Feb 10 (NationPress) The Telangana BJP organized a demonstration at the DGP office in Hyderabad on Tuesday, accusing the ruling Congress party of being responsible for the tragic suicide of its candidate in the elections for the Makthal municipality.
Party officials and supporters gathered outside the DGP office, chanting slogans against the government. They urged law enforcement to take action against those accountable for the death of Erukali Mahadevraappa.
As police attempted to disperse the crowd, a heated argument ensued, leading to a minor altercation between the two groups.
Mahadevraappa, who had submitted his nomination to contest as the BJP candidate from ward number 6 in Makthal municipality in Narayanpet district, was discovered hanging at his home late Monday night.
The family of Mahadevraappa claimed that he had faced threats and intimidation from his political rivals since he announced his candidacy.
Voting for elections across 116 municipalities and seven corporations in Telangana is set for Wednesday.
Meanwhile, state BJP president N. Ramchander Rao visited Makthal to offer condolences to Mahadevraappa's family.
Addressing the media, he held the Congress party accountable for the incident.
“The core reason behind this unfortunate death is the relentless intimidation and harassment from Congress affiliates,” he stated.
“This isn’t an isolated occurrence. Congress frequently engages in such activities while preaching about Democracy. Alarmingly, reports are surfacing that local police may have altered the original FIR. This is a disgraceful act that raises significant concerns regarding police impartiality and integrity. Such actions protect the guilty and undermine justice,” the BJP leader wrote on ‘X’.
He called for the police to revert to the original FIR without any alterations, insisting on a thorough post-mortem to ensure transparency and truth. He also demanded strict measures against local police officials involved in the FIR alteration.
Ramchander Rao asserted that immediate and firm action should be taken against all individuals implicated in the harassment of Mahadevraappa.
He announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for Mahadevraappa's family on behalf of the BJP.
Additionally, Union Minister for Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy raised the issue of the BJP candidate's suicide in the Lok Sabha.
BJP MP K. Laxman discussed the matter in the Rajya Sabha, demanding immediate accountability.
Kishan Reddy shared on social media that this is a disturbing incident.
“It starkly reflects the political atmosphere in Telangana under Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and the Congress party. Mahadevraappa, hailing from a modest Scheduled Tribe family, bravely stepped up to contest an election. For a young tribal leader to feel so defeated that hope vanishes is not merely a personal catastrophe. It highlights the severe threats to grassroots democracy in Telangana,” he expressed.
