K.C. Venugopal Critiques Kerala Poll Timeline, Assures Congress Readiness
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 16 (NationPress) K.C. Venugopal, the Congress General Secretary for Organization, expressed his concerns on Monday regarding the schedule set by the Election Commission of India for the Kerala Assembly elections. He argued that the interval between the nomination filing and the voting process is insufficient, yet he reaffirmed that the party is entirely ready for the upcoming elections.
In a statement to the media outside Parliament, Venugopal highlighted that the party has already developed its game plan and is optimistic about winning.
"We are prepared and absolutely ready for this election. Victory is within our reach. Our complete strategy has been established, and we are well-equipped to secure success. Preparedness is not an issue for us," he proclaimed.
He criticized the election timetable, noting that it allows minimal time for campaigning.
"The Election Commission has set a timeline that is quite tight. They announced the election dates yesterday (Sunday), and the notification was issued today. The first phase of voting is scheduled for April 9, with nomination filings occurring on the 23rd of this month, scrutiny on the 24th, and withdrawal of nominations on the 26th," he pointed out.
Venugopal mentioned that once these procedures are completed, candidates will have only about 11 days to campaign.
"During this period, there are several festivals, such as Good Friday and Easter. Consequently, candidates will essentially have only four to five days to connect with the electorate," he added.
He further questioned the necessity of having Kerala in the first phase of polling.
"If the Election Commission intended to announce the elections sooner, it could have done so in February, as it did the previous year. With the vote counting set for May 4, what was the rush to include Kerala in the first phase alongside Assam and the Union Territory of Puducherry?" he queried.
Venugopal also claimed that the Election Commission's credibility as a neutral body is diminishing. Nevertheless, he remains confident that the citizens of Kerala will back the Congress in the forthcoming elections.
