Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Alappuzha (Kerala), April 4 (NationPress) As the Kerala Assembly elections approach, the Congress party has intensified its criticism of the CPI-M-affiliated Kairali News TV channel. They allege that the channel has disseminated a manipulated and defamatory image of Congress General Secretary and MP K.C. Venugopal to mislead voters.
Dr. Abhishek Singhvi, the Chairman of Congress's Legal Cell, has filed a formal complaint with the Election Commission, claiming that the altered image falsely implies that Venugopal is accepting bribes.
The complaint highlights that a green circle was intentionally added to the image to bolster this misleading narrative and sway public opinion.
Characterizing this incident as a premeditated effort to damage Venugopal’s reputation just before the elections, Congress argues that such actions breach the Model Code of Conduct and compromise the electoral integrity.
Singhvi has urged the Commission for immediate intervention, requesting a thorough investigation into the matter and stringent penalties against the individuals involved.
The complaint also calls for the removal of the doctored image from all social media channels, including WhatsApp, Facebook, and X, where it has reportedly been circulated extensively.
In addition, Congress state Vice President A.A. Shukoor has approached the Alappuzha North police to seek legal action against the channel and its executives.
The complaint references various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including allegations of forgery, incitement of enmity, and criminal conspiracy, as well as Section 66 of the Information Technology Act.
Shukoor remarked that this incident is indicative of a larger trend aimed at disrupting the democratic process through misinformation and the targeted vilification of opposition figures.
He affirmed that the Congress party will pursue this issue both legally and politically, signaling a more intense competition as the campaign season reaches its climax.
Kerala is set to vote on April 9 to elect 140 new legislators.
