Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 15 ( IANS) Delivering a sharp critique, AICC general secretary KC Venugopal MP on Friday called for a public apology from former Union Minister Anurag Thakur and the BJP for belittling both Wayanad and Kerala.
Venugopal stated that the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, had revealed vote list manipulation in Bengaluru Central after a thorough four-month investigation, presenting "concrete evidence".
“Shortly after, Anurag Thakur made a similar assertion. How did he acquire this information? Was the BJP granted access to the electronic voter list by the Election Commission? And why hasn’t the EC requested a sworn statement from him, as they did with Rahul Gandhi?” Venugopal queried.
He contended that Thakur’s own assertions about fraudulent votes in various locations across the country serve as an acknowledgment that the BJP is aware of irregularities in voter rolls.
“Investigations by the media have validated Rahul Gandhi’s claims while exposing Thakur’s statements as factually inaccurate,” he remarked, criticizing the senior BJP MP for “lacking even basic research”.
As an illustration, Venugopal pointed out that Thakur’s allegation regarding multiple religious names at a single address in Chounderikunnu, Wayanad, is rooted in bias.
“Residents rightfully utilize that address. The name ‘Mymoona’ refers to three distinct individuals, as reported by the media in the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency. Even here, the BJP’s narrative introduces communal tones,” he asserted.
Shifting focus to Thrissur, Venugopal urged Union Minister and local MP Suresh Gopi to address the claims of fraudulent votes.
“No one opposes victories achieved through fair means. However, the mounting evidence casts serious doubts on the validity of the voter rolls. As an MP, it’s his duty to provide clarification,” he stated.
Venugopal further accused the BJP of “disregarding” the traditions associated with Independence Day.
He highlighted a Petroleum Ministry advertisement that positioned Savarkar’s image above that of Mahatma Gandhi, while omitting India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
“The Prime Minister opted to honor the RSS, which played no role in the struggle for freedom, while ignoring the patriots who fought for independence. Since assuming power, the BJP has been attempting to distort historical facts,” he claimed.
The Congress leader insisted that the BJP and Thakur should demonstrate the decency to apologize and urged the Election Commission to act impartially on all such allegations.
