Kerala's Pinarayi Vijayan Defends State Against Revanth Reddy's Criticism
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, April 3 (NationPress) A heated political debate unfolded between Kerala's Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his Telangana counterpart Revanth Reddy on Friday, as Vijayan provided a comprehensive defense against comments made by Reddy during his campaign visit to Kerala.
Reddy has captivated audiences in Kerala with his passionate speeches, even referencing a famous dialogue from Malayalam film star Mohanlal, while criticizing the Vijayan administration for alleged corruption and governance issues.
In a robust Facebook response, Vijayan accused the Telangana CM of deceiving himself and attempting to undermine Kerala.
Vijayan refuted the accusations by showcasing Kerala’s impressive performance on critical social metrics.
He highlighted that Kerala ranks first in the NITI Aayog Sustainable Development Index (2023–24) with 79 points, in contrast to Telangana's sixth position.
Moreover, he pointed out that Kerala boasts the lowest poverty rate in India at 0.55 percent, while Telangana's rate is significantly higher at 5.88 percent, and Kerala is on track to eliminate extreme poverty by the end of 2025.
The Chief Minister also emphasized Kerala’s notable achievements in literacy and healthcare, citing a literacy rate of 95.3 percent compared to Telangana’s 76.9 percent, and an Infant Mortality Rate of just 5 per 1,000 births, even lower than that of the United States.
He further stated that Kerala’s strong public health system allows its citizens to live 5 to 7 years longer than the national average.
Addressing Reddy’s criticisms, Vijayan suggested that instead of investing heavily in political campaigns in Kerala, the Telangana leader should prioritize tackling poverty and enhancing literacy in his state.
He also described it as political hypocrisy that a Telangana delegation had previously visited Thiruvananthapuram to learn about Kerala’s ‘Ente Bhoomi’ digital land records initiative while its Chief Minister now disparages the state.
Vijayan dismissed claims of collusion with the Central government, accusing the Congress party of acting as a “B team” of the BJP by not opposing policies that financially restrict Kerala.
In a pointed conclusion, Vijayan stated that Kerala has little to glean from a government that reportedly delays salaries and pensions, inviting Reddy to observe Kerala’s welfare model in person.
