Will Vijay Contest from Perambur in the Upcoming Assembly Polls?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Feb 22 (NationPress) Members of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) convened on Sunday, passing a resolution that calls for the party leader Vijay to run for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections from the Perambur constituency. This move highlights the party's strategy to establish North Chennai as a pivotal area in the forthcoming political contest.
The resolution was introduced during a party meeting held in Chennai by TVK's election campaign management secretary Aadhav Arjuna.
While addressing the attendees, he expressed that there was a consensus among the members for Vijay to enter the electoral race from Perambur.
This resolution received support from the party's general secretary N. Anand, who promised that the sentiments of the cadre would be communicated to the leadership.
"We fully endorse the resolution presented by Aadhav and will ensure your wishes reach Thalapathy," Anand remarked, referring to Vijay by his well-known nickname.
Aadhav elaborated on the reasoning behind this demand, stating that the party leadership is focused on contesting in areas with significant poverty and public need.
He pointed out that North Chennai exemplifies these conditions, thus aligning with the party's political ideology.
Furthermore, he mentioned that Vijay prefers to run from a North Chennai constituency such as Perambur, Kolathur, or R.K. Nagar, emphasizing the strategic significance the party places on this region.
Aadhav also indicated that Vijay's initial foray into the North Chennai political scene was influenced by previous incidents where TVK members faced aggression while campaigning peacefully in the Harbour constituency.
In a direct affront to the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Aadhav rejected claims of Chennai being the party’s political bastion.
He stated that TVK is purposefully launching its campaign in the capital city to challenge that narrative.
"From this point forward, Chennai is under the influence of TVK," he proclaimed, earning applause from party supporters.
Aadhav also criticized state minister P. K. Sekar Babu, who represents a North Chennai constituency, asserting that while the DMK claims supremacy in the region, influential local figures are now aligning with TVK.
With the 2026 Assembly elections on the horizon, TVK's strategic decision signifies its intent to mount a vigorous campaign in urban constituencies, positioning Vijay as a leading figure in a crucial electoral battle in Chennai.
