Chennai, March 14 (NationPress) The electoral constituency from which actor-turned-politician Vijay will run in the forthcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections is generating significant interest within the state's political arena.

Recent indications from the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) point towards either Perambur in North Chennai or Tiruchirappalli (East) as potential choices for his campaign.

Senior party leaders have stated that both constituencies are being seriously evaluated as Vijay gears up for his inaugural Assembly election as a political figure.

A senior official from TVK mentioned that the party leader is likely to opt for a more compact constituency, enabling him to campaign extensively across the state for fellow candidates.

“He is likely to select either Perambur or Tiruchy East. Both are smaller areas, facilitating his ability to campaign in other regions as well,” the leader disclosed, preferring to remain anonymous.

Interest in Perambur intensified after Vijay subtly suggested this possibility during recent discussions with party aspirants. At one meeting, he reportedly inquired, “Should I visit Perambur often?”

Since March 10, the TVK leader has been engaged in discussions with aspirants and party officials as part of the Assembly election preparations.

Previously, during a party meeting on February 22, a resolution was adopted urging Vijay to contest from Perambur, which was reportedly introduced by the party’s campaign management secretary, Aadhav Arjun.

TVK general secretary N. Anand stated that the party leadership would communicate the members’ request to Vijay.

Perambur, known as a major industrial and residential center in Chennai, is particularly recognized for the Integral Coach Factory (ICF). The constituency encompasses nearly 300,000 voters with a diverse social demographic. Approximately 24% of the population is composed of Dalits, while a significant Anglo-Indian community also resides there.

From a political standpoint, Perambur has predominantly been a bastion for the DMK and its allies.

In the 2021 Assembly elections, DMK's R.D. Shekar secured the seat with a victory margin of 54,976 votes against AIADMK’s N.R. Dhanapalan. Conversely, in 2016, the AIADMK managed to win the constituency with a slim margin.

The alternative option under consideration is Tiruchirappalli (East), an urban constituency established in 2011, boasting over 250,000 voters. Currently, this seat is held by DMK's Inigo Irudayaraj, who triumphed in the 2021 election, defeating AIADMK's Vellamandi Natarajan by a margin of 53,797 votes.

With a substantial urban voter base and minority communities comprising nearly a quarter of the electorate, Tiruchy East is also regarded as a strategically important constituency.

The final decision regarding Vijay’s constituency is anticipated to be revealed soon as the state approaches the Assembly election timeline.
