New Delhi, Jan 27 (NationPress) England batter James Vince has expressed confidence in Indian cricket icons Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to regain their peak performance despite their recent difficulties in Test matches. Vince, addressing the current lean spell of the two players, highlighted their inherent quality and determination.
Following the disappointing series in Australia during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, India's upcoming red-ball challenge will be the England tour for a five-match Test series scheduled between June 20 and August 4. The opening Test is set to take place at Headingley, Leeds from June 20-24, with subsequent matches at Edgbaston, Birmingham (July 2-6), Lord's (July 10-14), Old Trafford, Manchester (July 23-27), and The Oval (July 31-August 4).
"It’s challenging to forecast. English conditions can be advantageous for bowlers, but they can also benefit batters on certain days. The caliber of players like Virat and Rohit is beyond question. If they possess the drive and passion for Test cricket, history indicates they will find a way to excel," James shared with IANS on Monday.
"We are unaccustomed to seeing athletes of such stature endure prolonged slumps, but it underscores their humanity. I have no doubt they will rebound strongly if they are motivated to achieve," he added.
Both players have faced backlash for their performances during the series against Australia, where India encountered significant challenges.
Rohit, the captain for both Test and ODI formats, had a challenging BGT series, accumulating only 31 runs across five innings. His batting difficulties were further amplified by scrutiny regarding his captaincy, culminating in his exclusion from the final Test in Sydney.
In an effort to regain his form, Rohit participated in a Ranji Trophy match for Mumbai against Jammu & Kashmir. However, his scores of 3 and 28 did little to boost confidence. This marked his first Ranji Trophy appearance since 2015, emphasizing his limited exposure to red-ball cricket outside of international competitions.
Despite the criticism, Rohit continues to be a pivotal player in India’s strategy, and the forthcoming three-match ODI series against England, commencing February 6, will offer him a chance to bounce back.
Virat Kohli similarly faced difficulties during the BGT, scoring only 190 runs across five Tests and falling victim to outside-off deliveries eight times. This technical issue has become a recurring theme, yet Kohli's diligence and resolve remain his greatest assets.
Kohli is set to return to red-ball cricket in the upcoming Ranji Trophy match for Delhi against Railways at the Arun Jaitley Stadium starting January 30. This will be his first Ranji Trophy match since 2012, and fans are hopeful it will serve as a springboard for the former captain to regain his form.
While their Test performances are under scrutiny, both players have the chance to regain momentum in the white-ball format. With the ODI series against England approaching, Rohit and Kohli will be eager to make a significant impact.
