Dhaka, Feb 12 (NationPress) Violence persists across Bangladesh as citizens cast their votes in the 13th parliamentary election on Thursday. Nasiruddin Patwari, a candidate representing the 11-party alliance and leader of the National Citizens Party (NCP), was reportedly assaulted while visiting a polling booth in the Dhaka-8 constituency.

According to Bangladesh's prominent Bengali daily Jugantor, Patwari faced an attack while addressing journalists at the polling center around noon. He was safely rescued by law enforcement, but later claimed that supporters of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) candidate, Mirza Abbas, were responsible for the alleged 'vote theft' and assaults.

“While he was speaking, supporters of Mirza Abbas shouted slogans of 'Fake Fake'. At one point, they were chased and the attack took place,” reported Jugantor.

In a post on social media, the NCP leader accused that voting was being influenced by Mirza Abbas's “terrorist forces” and claimed that BNP leaders and supporters assaulted him in the presence of local authorities.

Election Day in Bangladesh has been overshadowed by violence.

Multiple polling stations across the nation experienced turmoil on Thursday, resulting in the death of a political figure as voting unfolded, local reports state.

The incidents began after polling commenced early in the morning, highlighting the deteriorating law enforcement situation and unstable security climate in Bangladesh.

Amid the escalating chaos, a BNP leader, Mohibuzzaman Kochi, lost his life at the Alia Madrasa polling station in Khulna district.

Witnesses and police cited by Jugantor indicated that tension arose between BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami supporters on Thursday morning near the Alia Madras Academic Building.

Former Khulna Sadar Thana BNP organising secretary Yusuf Harun Majnu stated, “Tension existed at the center since morning. The principal of Alia Madrasa was campaigning for Jamaat. When he intervened, he pushed Mohibuzzaman Kochi, causing him to hit a tree and sustain a fatal head injury.”

Confirming the incident, Khulna Sadar Police Station Sub Inspector Khan Faisal Rafi, responsible for the center, remarked, “When tension arose between the two factions, we promptly intervened to separate them.”

Partha Roy, Emergency Medical Officer at Khulna City Medical College Hospital, informed Jugantor that BNP leader Kochi was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.

In another incident that morning, a cocktail bomb explosion at a polling station in Gopalganj Sadar Upazila resulted in injuries to three individuals. This incident took place at the Reshma International School polling station in Gopalganj district.
