Dhaka, Dec 11 (NationPress) Amidst a rising internal discord within the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), a tragic incident occurred in Mirsarai upazila of Chittagong district, resulting in the death of one member of the party's student faction, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), and injuries to five others. Local media reported this violence on Thursday.
The victim, Gazi Tahmid Khan, aged 20, passed away early Thursday while being treated at the Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
“An argument escalated into a chase among BNP supporters on Wednesday evening, leading to injuries. Sadly, Tahmid later succumbed to his wounds in the hospital. No legal action has been initiated yet; however, an investigation is underway,” stated Kazi Nazmul Haque, Officer-in-Charge of Jorarganj Police Station, as reported by Dhaka Tribune.
According to reports, a gathering was held at Baraiyarhat municipality in Mirsarai on Wednesday evening to pray for the health of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
A clash erupted post-event between supporters of former Baraiyarhat Municipality BNP President Didarul Alam Niazi and opposing party members over a dispute regarding the chairmanship within the party. It was during this scuffle that Tahmid was stabbed and sustained critical injuries.
Initially, he was taken to a private hospital in Jorarganj before being transferred to CMCH, where he ultimately lost his life. Reports indicate that at least five other individuals were injured in the altercation.
Recent weeks have seen a surge in factional disputes within the BNP; just last week, clashes in Gazipur district resulted in injuries to at least 10 individuals following disagreements over party nominations.
The violence in Kaliakair Upazila involved supporters of BNP's nominee for the Gazipur-1 constituency and the former municipality mayor, Mujibur Rahman, alongside supporters of Ishraq Siddiqui, son of a former BNP committee member who was denied a nomination.
Local reports highlight significant property damage, with multiple party election campaign offices and vehicles vandalized and set ablaze during the unrest.
The BNP has experienced a troubling rise in violence, with factional clashes resulting in fatalities and injuries. Analysts suggest that Khaleda Zia's BNP has collaborated with the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus to destabilize the democratically-elected Awami League government last year.
