Dhaka, March 20 (NationPress) A wave of violence erupted in Bangladesh as a factional struggle within the Bangladesh National Party (BNP) resulted in multiple injuries in the Chittagong district.
The altercation, which took place on Wednesday night, involved supporters of former BNP Parliamentarian Giasuddin Quader Chowdhury and the Convener of the BNP in Chittagong district north, Golam Akbar Khondokar, according to local media.
During this conflict, a local leader from the party’s student wing, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), sustained critical injuries.
He succumbed to his injuries while being rushed to a hospital in Dhaka on the same night. Reports indicate that numerous others from both factions were injured.
Tensions flared at an iftar gathering when a group arrived demanding the event's cessation, leading to a heated argument. This escalated into a violent confrontation, with witnesses reporting gunfire during the chaos, as stated by the esteemed Bangladeshi publication, The Daily Star.
"Prior to iftar, law enforcement intervened to disperse both factions; however, they clashed again after iftar. Preliminary investigations indicate that the Golam Akbar faction organized the iftar event, but their adversaries sought to halt it, instigating the violence," commented the officer-in-charge of the local police station.
There have been recurring factional disputes among BNP leaders over the past few months.
In a similar clash on Tuesday, at least eleven individuals were injured due to a confrontation between two BNP factions regarding iftar gatherings in the Sirajganj district.
Following the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in early August of the previous year, internal conflicts within the BNP have escalated, with various factions vying for influence.
Law enforcement and BNP insiders informed The Daily Star that the clashes arose from rivalries over dominance and extortion funds.
Furthermore, insiders highlighted that the recent surge in internal disputes is fueled by the belief that the BNP is poised to regain power in the upcoming general elections, prompting opportunistic factions to strive for control.
Khaleda Zia's BNP collaborated with the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus to dismantle the democratically elected Awami League government.
It emerged as the most significant political entity in Bangladesh following the downfall of its long-standing opponent, Sheikh Hasina. However, internal rifts have intensified, leading to violent confrontations that resulted in numerous injuries and fatalities among its leaders.
