New Delhi, April 2 (NationPress) The chairman of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM), Iqbal Singh Lalpura, expressed his backing for the Waqf (Amendment) Bill on Wednesday, coinciding with a lengthy debate in the Lok Sabha regarding the contentious legislation.

Lalpura informed IANS that this legislation serves the broader interests of the community and will not adversely affect individuals of the Muslim faith.

He underscored the importance of the legislation by stating: “Any bill presented in the House aims to benefit society and the nation. A Joint Parliamentary Committee was established to discuss Waqf, leading to open dialogues. It was concluded that Waqf property is designated for the poor, Pasmanda, and underprivileged Muslims who should reap its benefits. Therefore, this Bill is intended to assist people rather than harm anyone. This should be understood by all.”

He characterized the Muslim community as an integral part of the nation, asserting: “The Bill, which serves the interests of the community, is also beneficial for the country. The population of Muslims in our nation is substantial. They have made numerous sacrifices for the country, and many from this community have held prominent constitutional positions, including that of President, with others serving as ministers in various governments. This is their homeland. The government is striving to empower them and ensure proper utilization of Waqf.”

Commending the PM Modi-led government, he noted that post-independence, the Minority Commission was established in 1978, claiming that previous administrations maintained power by instilling fear in the Muslim community.

“Even now, they seek to instigate fear among them, while the Prime Minister aims to treat them equally. We are advocates of Ganga-Jamuna Tehzeeb. This bill has been introduced to ensure that Waqf property can be advantageous for those in need. Once the Bill is enacted, the Waqf property will be utilized effectively,” he remarked.

“In a nation characterized by Ganga-Jamuna Tehzeeb, everyone is entitled to equal rights, and PM Modi is committed to serving all. He has worked for people of all religious backgrounds, be it Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists, or those from Persian society,” he emphasized.
