Guwahati, Nov 11 (NationPress) In a significant policy move to uphold women's rights, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Tuesday that the state government will table a bill to outlaw polygamy during the upcoming session of the State Assembly on November 25.
Addressing a large public gathering in Raha of Nagaon district, CM Sarma reiterated his administration's dedication to ensuring women's safety, dignity, and empowerment.
"We are enacting legislation to ban polygamy and protect women from social injustices. This initiative will further our goal to establish a progressive and just Assam," the Chief Minister stated.
This announcement occurred during an event where CM Sarma distributed cheques of Rs 10,000 to 37,833 women beneficiaries under the Mukhya Mantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan (MMUA), a key state program focused on enhancing women's entrepreneurship and financial autonomy.
Out of the total beneficiaries, 36,704 hailed from rural regions, while 1,129 were from urban areas.
Emphasizing the success of women-led self-help groups in Assam, the Chief Minister noted that nearly eight lakh women have achieved 'lakhpati' status, earning over Rs 1 lakh annually through various income-generating ventures.
"Women are the backbone of a self-sufficient Assam," CM Sarma remarked, sharing stories of local entrepreneurs from Raha who have transformed their livelihoods through weaving, livestock farming, and crafts.
He further explained that the MMUA scheme offers an initial capital of Rs 10,000 to each beneficiary, which can be increased to Rs 25,000 or ₹50,000 in later phases based on their performance.
The Chief Minister also revealed that an additional 4,000 families in Raha will be eligible for the Orunodoi Scheme, which provides monthly financial support to women for household expenditures.
Referring to Orunodoi as a "symbol of dignity and respect for women," the Chief Minister highlighted that no previous government has introduced as many initiatives focused on women's welfare.
Later the same day, CM Sarma inaugurated a Rs 84.6-crore railway overbridge linking Raha to Chaparmukh Junction and West Karbi Anglong district.
