Guwahati, Nov 27 (NationPress) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized on Thursday that women’s rights in the state “will not be compromised” during the introduction of the Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025 in the Assam Legislative Assembly.
In a post on the social media platform X, CM Sarma declared that the government is resolutely advancing to provide justice, dignity, and legal protections for women.
He claimed that the proposed legislation demonstrates Assam’s strong dedication to uphold the values of 'Nari Shakti' and to bolster the status of women in society.
The Bill aims to enforce a comprehensive ban on polygamy across the state, a practice the government associates with the exploitation, emotional distress, and legal vulnerability of numerous women.
Nevertheless, the proposed law will not apply in regions governed by the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, where the traditional practices of tribal communities are safeguarded.
According to the Bill’s provisions, anyone found guilty of entering a second marriage while the first one is still valid can face a prison sentence of up to seven years. If an individual hides an existing marriage and marries again, the penalty could rise to ten years in prison.
Importantly, the legislation holds accountable those who assist or facilitate unlawful polygamous unions.
Individuals such as priests, guardians, relatives, or anyone who knowingly aids or conducts such marriages could face imprisonment of up to two years.
To support women affected by these illegal marriages, the Bill includes measures for compensation and legal protection. The government stated this initiative would offer financial support and legal recourse to victims previously left without sufficient options. The proposed law also introduces stiffer penalties for repeat offenders, reinforcing the state’s zero-tolerance stance against practices that infringe upon women’s rights and dignity.
“This marks a significant step towards justice. The Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025 is not just legislation; it symbolizes a societal commitment to uphold the rights and dignity of our mothers and sisters,” Sarma asserted.
