Kohima, Nov 11 (NationPress) Veteran Naga politician and five-time MLA Imkong L. Imchen passed away at a private hospital in Guwahati on Tuesday following a short illness. He was aged 75.
Imchen, who served as an advisor to the Nagaland government in the Information and Public Relations and Soil and Water Conservation departments, is survived by his wife, four sons, and two daughters.
Originally from Mangmetong village in Mokokchung district, Imchen reportedly experienced a heart attack on November 8, leading to his admission to a hospital in Kohima.
After being stabilized, he was airlifted to Guwahati on November 10 for advanced medical care. He had pre-existing kidney issues and diabetes and underwent dialysis before his health worsened.
The Chairman of Mangmetong Village Council mentioned that his remains were to be taken to Indisen village in Dimapur.
The state government declared that a state funeral would occur at his official residence on Old Ministers’ Hill, Kohima, on November 12, followed by traditional rites in Mangmetong.
Imchen's public service included student activism, involvement in tribal bodies, party leadership, and five terms as a member of the Nagaland Assembly. He held roles such as President of the Ao Students’ Conference, General Secretary of the Naga Students’ Federation, and Vice President and later President of Ao Senden. He also served as President of the District Congress Committee and Vice President of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee.
He was elected five times from the Koridang constituency, initially as an Independent in 2003, then on Naga People’s Front tickets in 2008, 2013, and 2018, finally winning on a BJP ticket in 2023.
Throughout his career, he served as a cabinet minister in previous governments.
Union Health and Family Welfare Minister and BJP National President Jagat Prakash Nadda, acting Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, and numerous other leaders extended their condolences over his passing.
Nadda expressed his sorrow on his X handle, stating, "Deeply saddened by the passing of senior BJP leader and MLA Shri Imkong L. Imchen from the Koridang constituency, Nagaland."
He further noted, "He was a leader who always maintained a connection with the people and worked sincerely for society. His departure is a significant loss for both the party and the state. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and well-wishers during this challenging time. May his soul rest in peace."
The Governor expressed sadness over Imchen's demise, calling him a dedicated leader who served with commitment and integrity. He shared his condolences with the bereaved family.
Chief Minister Rio, in his tribute, described Imchen as a dear friend and colleague.
"I knew him as a warm, cheerful, and outspoken individual, unafraid to share his views and always standing for his beliefs. He was a visionary leader with an extraordinary ability to connect with individuals from all backgrounds. Throughout his political journey, he worked diligently and selflessly for the welfare of the community," the CM stated.
Rio noted that the Ao community and the Naga people have lost a formidable leader, and the void left in his absence will be hard to fill.
