Mumbai, July 12 (NationPress) Jagadguru Shankaracharya Maharaj Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati addressed the ongoing Marathi-Hindi language discourse in Maharashtra on Saturday, underscoring the significance of the Marathi language.
In an interview with IANS, he stated: “Everyone should learn Marathi, and we are also striving in that direction. When we depart from here, we will make an effort to converse in Marathi. There are enthusiastic individuals eager to teach Marathi, and if they guide us, we will learn swiftly. When the instructor shows more enthusiasm than the student, results tend to be more favorable. Although we initiated this endeavor, the response from the other side was not very robust, so we are learning progressively. Some have even suggested providing financial assistance for this, which we are contemplating.”
Regarding Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray uniting over the Marathi language matter, the Shankaracharya remarked:
“Just as we previously offered our blessings to both Thackeray brothers, we are pleased to witness their reunion. It is heartening when siblings come together. Indian culture teaches us the importance of unity. However, they now face a challenge: their supporters hold varying ideologies, making unity a daunting task. Collaborating for the Marathi language is a promising beginning, but whether they will stay united in the future remains to be seen. We hope they continue their joint efforts for the public good.”
When questioned about the recent comment suggesting politicians retire after fulfilling their duties, he responded: “That statement requires contextual evaluation, and we currently lack the full context.”
On the significance of the Hindi language, he commented:
“If anyone has promoted Hindi globally, it is Maharashtra, particularly through Mumbai’s film industry, Bollywood. Bollywood has given Hindi an international identity. Therefore, when small vendors are penalized for not speaking Marathi, yet Bollywood remains unchallenged, it seems disproportionate.”
Addressing the recent violence against those not speaking Marathi, the Shankaracharya stated:
“Politicians must remain active within communities and society. How can they effectively serve the populace from home? Engaging with the public is crucial. All political leaders must step into the field. Our country faces numerous issues, and only through dialogue with the people can we find solutions.”
On the Maharashtra government’s decision to officially designate the cow as 'mother,' he commented:
“We are delighted that the Maharashtra government has decided to refer to the cow as ‘mother.’ That was our expectation; even if you don’t feed her, at least show her respect. While other states or even the central government hesitate to call the cow ‘mother,’ Maharashtra has shown bravery by doing so. This is a commendable and courageous move.”
