New Delhi/Aizawl, Nov 7 (NationPress) A woman believed to be the orchestrator of a significant drug trafficking operation connecting India and Myanmar has been apprehended in New Delhi, authorities reported on Friday.
A senior official disclosed that in a distinct operation, Joseph Lianthangpuia (42) of Chanakya Place in Delhi was detained on Wednesday (November 5) related to a case initiated at Mizoram’s Saitual police station, which involves the state's most considerable heroin confiscation of 15 kg recovered from a vehicle on August 23.
Lianthangpuia is set to be transported to Mizoram for additional inquiries, according to the official.
The official further indicated that a team from Mizoram Police, operating from Zokhawthar police station in Champhai district, in collaboration with the Delhi Police and the Special Bureau, arrested Lalchhuanthangi (50) in Delhi.
This woman is identified as the primary forward link in the case registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act of 1985 and the Foreigners Act, as stated by the official.
She is suspected to be the kingpin of a cross-border drug trafficking network between India and Myanmar and has a criminal history across several nations.
The case also involves the confiscation of 7.422 kg of brick-type heroin on July 10 near Kudamsen Kai at Zokhawthar in the bordering Champhai district.
Authorities noted that five individuals were previously arrested in connection with this case.
Investigators have revealed that the woman was incarcerated in Thailand from 2014 to 2022 for a drug-related case and was on bail for a financial scam in Kerala in 2023.
She is being escorted to Mizoram after securing a transit remand from the Dwarka Court in Delhi, added the official.
Officials mentioned that the woman, originally from Khatla South in Aizawl, had been living in the national capital for an extended period. Following months of meticulous surveillance and investigations tracing her network and activities, law enforcement finally managed to locate and detain her in Delhi.
At least six of Mizoram's 11 districts—Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip—share a 510-km unfenced border with Myanmar, which serves as a significant transit route for various drugs, especially heroin and methamphetamine tablets.
