Kochi, Aug 1 (NationPress) A 59-year-old woman demonstrated remarkable quick thinking by saving a fellow passenger’s life who was on the brink of falling from a moving train at Thrippunithura railway station near Kochi on Friday morning.
Usha Suresh Babu, a nutritionist residing near Kochi, had just boarded the Vanchinad Express when she observed a man struggling to maintain his balance while attempting to enter the adjacent coach, as reported by local media.
The train, which only pauses for a minute at this station, had already started moving when the passenger, identified as 71-year-old Muhammed Abdul, made his attempt to board and lost his footing.
Upon hearing a cry for help, Usha turned around and noticed a hand slipping away from the door.
Without a moment’s hesitation, she dashed forward to grab Abdul’s arm, holding on tightly while calling out for assistance from other passengers.
Her urgent shouts quickly attracted the attention of two teachers from Maharaja’s College, Sumi Joy Oliapuram and Santhosh T Varghese, who were also aboard.
They activated the emergency chain, halting the train. With the assistance of a young man nearby, Abdul was safely pulled back into the train compartment.
He sustained minor injuries and was promptly taken to Thrippunithura Taluk Hospital before being transferred to Kalamassery Medical College in Kochi for further care.
Later, Usha expressed that she did not view her actions as heroic. “I didn’t think twice. I just reacted,” she stated.
“I’m relieved that I was able to assist him and that nothing worse occurred,” Usha added.
Her quick thinking and decisive actions received accolades from railway officials and fellow passengers alike. Her husband, T Suresh Babu, also praised her for her life-saving efforts. The couple has a son, Vishnu, currently residing in Hyderabad.
