Yogi Adityanath transfers ₹1,500 crore LPG subsidy, promises packages for UP farmers, women
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, transferred ₹1,500 crore in LPG cylinder refill subsidies directly into the bank accounts of more than 1.89 crore eligible families in Lucknow, announcing it as a Diwali gift. Adityanath also declared that two major welfare packages — one for crop-loss-affected farmers and another aimed at making women economically self-reliant — will be rolled out soon.
LPG Cylinder Subsidy: How It Works
A filled LPG cylinder is priced at ₹983.45. The Central government already provides a subsidy of ₹335.40, leaving a balance of ₹648.55 for the beneficiary. The Uttar Pradesh government has now absorbed this remaining cost, paying it directly to gas companies, which means eligible households under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana will receive their cylinders entirely free of charge.
Addressing beneficiaries at the Lucknow event, Adityanath said: 'The remaining ₹648.55, which beneficiaries had to pay themselves, has now been covered by the state government as a Diwali gift and paid directly to the gas companies. As a result, beneficiaries will receive LPG cylinders free of cost and can use the savings of around ₹650 for Diwali celebrations, including for buying sweets and lamps.'
Upcoming Package for 3 Crore Farmer Families
Chief Minister Adityanath acknowledged that standing crops across the state have suffered severe damage due to El Niño, climate change, excessive rainfall, drought, and hailstorms. While immediate compensation is already being disbursed, he said a special economic package will soon be introduced for the state's 3 crore farmer families — one of the largest such beneficiary groups in India.
This comes amid mounting agrarian distress in several parts of Uttar Pradesh, where erratic weather patterns this season reportedly damaged standing kharif crops across multiple districts.
Women's Economic Empowerment Package in the Pipeline
A separate package is also being readied to make women 'self-reliant and economically independent, enabling them to support their families and provide better education for their children,' Adityanath said. He cited ongoing state initiatives including Lakhpati Didi and Business Correspondents (BC Sakhis) as programmes already delivering financial independence to women at the grassroots. Honorariums for anganwadi workers, cooks, village watchmen, and PRD personnel have also been raised, he added.
Political Attacks and Law-and-Order Claims
The Chief Minister used the occasion to mount a sharp attack on both the previous Congress-led UPA government at the Centre and the earlier Samajwadi Party government in Uttar Pradesh. He alleged that before 2014, obtaining an LPG connection required bribes ranging from ₹25,000 to ₹50,000, and pointed to the Commonwealth Games, 2G, and coal scandals as emblematic of that era. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi with ending this by launching the Ujjwala Yojana from Ballia, Uttar Pradesh on 1 May 2016.
On law and order, Adityanath claimed that before 2017, festivals in Uttar Pradesh were frequently marked by unrest, riots, and curfews. 'Today, no one dares to harass women or extort money from traders because of the strict law-and-order environment. This improvement in security has enabled women to work confidently even in night shifts,' he said. He also cited a recent World Bank report claiming that 46 crore Indians have risen above the poverty line.
Other Welfare Measures Announced
Adityanath announced the launch of Annapurna Bhojanalayas — subsidised meal facilities — at market yards and labour hubs across the state, targeting farmers bringing produce to mandis and construction workers. He also highlighted Atal Residential Schools, established through the BOC Board for children of construction workers, offering free high-quality education. Fair-price shops are being upgraded into model outlets called 'Annapurna Bhawans'.
With assembly election cycles keeping welfare delivery politically charged in Uttar Pradesh, both the farmer package and the women's empowerment package are expected to attract scrutiny over implementation timelines and disbursement mechanisms.
