Chennai, February 24 (NationPress) A tragic accident occurred early Tuesday, resulting in the death of a 20-year-old woman and injuring at least ten others when a mini-bus transporting pilgrims overturned after colliding with the central median near Avadi.

As per police reports, over 25 residents from Kandamangalam village in Villupuram district were on their way to the Siruvapuri Murugan Temple.

The vehicle, operated by Mohan (39), was navigating the Chennai–Tiruvallur High Road when the incident took place close to Vellanur, on the outskirts of Avadi.

Initial investigations hint that the driver might have fallen asleep while driving.

The bus lost control, hit a small bridge structure on the median, and subsequently rolled into a roadside ditch.

The collision trapped passengers within the wreckage.

One of the passengers, Revakka (20), suffered severe injuries and succumbed at the scene. More than ten individuals incurred various injuries, including fractures and head trauma. Emergency services were promptly notified, and several ambulances transported the injured to the Tiruvallur Government Hospital for medical attention.

Authorities from the Avadi police station and the Traffic Investigation Wing swiftly arrived at the scene to facilitate rescue efforts alongside local residents.

A case has been filed, and ongoing inquiries are aimed at uncovering the precise cause of the accident.

This incident adds to a troubling trend of road accidents reported across Tamil Nadu in recent weeks.

Earlier this month, multiple fatalities were noted in highway collisions in districts like Madurai and Salem, reigniting concerns regarding road safety, driver fatigue, and risks associated with night travel.

Data from the State Transport Department reveals that overspeeding and driver exhaustion remain leading factors in accidents, particularly during late-night and early-morning hours.

Authorities have consistently urged drivers, especially those managing long-distance and pilgrimage vehicles, to rest adequately before embarking on overnight trips.

Law enforcement officials stated that awareness campaigns and stricter enforcement measures are being amplified to prevent such avoidable tragedies.
