YSRCP: No local body seat should go uncontested in Andhra Pradesh polls
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) State Coordinator Sajjala Ramakrishna Reddy on Wednesday, 14 October directed party observers and coordination teams to ensure that not a single seat in the upcoming Andhra Pradesh local body elections goes uncontested for want of a YSRCP candidate. The directive came hours after the Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission (SEC) announced the election schedule from Tadepalli.
Key Directive from Party Leadership
Addressing a teleconference with observers and coordination teams, Sajjala said the order came directly from YSRCP President Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy — no local body seat should be left vacant due to the absence of a party candidate. He instructed Parliament and Assembly constituency observers to remain in the field round-the-clock for the next 15 to 20 days until nominations, polling, and counting are completed.
Sajjala noted that the compressed election schedule demands that candidate selection, documentation, nomination filings, and campaign preparations proceed simultaneously. Observers will be assessed on their field presence, problem-solving ability, coordination, and support extended to candidates throughout the process.
Operational Preparations and Documentation
Candidates have been asked to apply immediately for caste certificates, No-Dues certificates, and other mandatory documents. Any delays in obtaining these must be reported to the central office for legal intervention. Candidates are also directed to file nominations early and document any obstruction, police intervention, or administrative irregularity through video evidence.
A daily reporting mechanism will connect field teams with Parliament observers, regional coordinators, district presidents, and the central office. Observers are also required to monitor campaign activity, polling-station arrangements, CCTV coverage, and counting centre preparations.
YSRCP Petition to State Election Commission
Separately, YSRCP General Secretary Lella Appi Reddy submitted a formal representation to the State Election Commission seeking an immediate mechanism for prospective candidates to obtain a consolidated, authenticated list of cases registered against them anywhere in the state.
The representation stated that several YSRCP leaders and prospective candidates were facing cases at different police stations and, in many instances, were unaware of the case numbers, police stations, or districts concerned. This, according to the submission, could lead to incomplete or inaccurate disclosures in nomination papers — a procedural risk with legal consequences.
What Appi Reddy Has Sought
The YSRCP General Secretary requested the SEC to direct the Director General of Police, district Superintendents of Police, Commissioners of Police, and Station House Officers to provide — through local police stations — a consolidated statewide case list to any prospective candidate who approaches with Aadhaar-based identity verification. Where no cases are found, the police should issue written confirmation. The submission also sought acknowledgement of every application and supply of information within 24 hours, with the facility made available uniformly to all prospective candidates across party lines.
As the SEC processes the representation, YSRCP's mobilisation machinery is expected to go into full gear ahead of what is shaping up to be a fiercely contested local body election cycle in Andhra Pradesh.
