Dhaka, Dec 24 (NationPress) Exiled Bangladeshi novelist and human rights advocate Taslima Nasreen stated on Wednesday that the tenure of interim government's chief advisor Mohammad Yunus has been marred by significant and pervasive human rights violations throughout the South Asian nation.
Criticizing Yunus for the human rights abuses in Bangladesh, Nasreen utilized her social media platform X to convey, "Reliable reports suggest that mob violence, lynching, and communal assaults have been occurring with disturbing frequency -- often almost daily. Under his governance, women in Bangladesh are subjected to rape, silenced, threatened, and terrorized, all while he preaches to the international community about women's economic empowerment."
She emphasized that Yunus, the founder of the New York-based nonprofit microfinance organization Grameen America, has held the position of Director and co-chair and has received financial compensation from the organization for at least the past four years.
"He travels first class, receiving global accolades, while profiting from the debt of impoverished Hispanic and Black women in the United States via Grameen America. As he speaks on international platforms about empowering women entrepreneurs, Bangladeshi garment workers are plunged into poverty as factories are destroyed and livelihoods ruined by forces linked to his supporters," she noted.
Expressing her alarm, Nasreen remarked that while Yunus rejoices in "economic independence" in America, women in Bangladesh face beatings, coercion into hijab, restrictions on their freedom of movement, and are denied even the most fundamental safety and dignity.
