Kyiv, July 5 (NationPress) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that he engaged in discussions regarding Ukraine's air defence capabilities during a phone call with US President Donald Trump.
Both leaders have agreed to collaborate in enhancing the protection of Ukraine's skies, as stated by Zelensky in a social media update on Friday.
This conversation took place amid escalating Russian air assaults across Ukraine, including an overnight attack on July 4 that hit Kyiv and multiple other regions, resulting in injuries to at least 23 civilians and causing numerous fires in the capital, according to Xinhua news agency.
“We talked about the situation: Russian air strikes and the broader front line conditions. President Trump is well-informed,” the Ukrainian President remarked.
“We explored air defence strategies and committed to improving airspace security. A meeting between our teams was also agreed upon.”
Zelensky noted that they discussed potential capabilities of the defence industry and opportunities for collaborative production.
The dialogue also touched on mutual procurement, investment opportunities, the diplomatic landscape, and Ukraine's partnerships with the US and other global allies, as per Zelensky.
It was confirmed by the White House and Pentagon on Tuesday that the Trump administration had suspended a portion of military assistance to Ukraine after reviewing US stockpiles.
During a call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on July 3, Trump stated he made no advancements regarding Iran or the Ukraine conflict.
“We are prepared for direct projects with the US and consider this absolutely essential for our security, particularly concerning drones and associated technologies,” Zelensky emphasized.
Trump assured Zelensky that the US is ready to support Ukraine's air defence in light of intensified Russian attacks, as reported by Axios citing unnamed sources.
The conversation between the two Presidents reportedly lasted around 40 minutes.
This call followed a discussion between Trump and Putin, wherein the Kremlin reaffirmed that “Russia will persist in pursuing its objectives” in its ongoing conflict against Ukraine, despite US calls for a ceasefire.
Trump expressed disappointment following his July 3 conversation with Putin, stating, “I don’t believe he’s ready... I don’t think he intends to halt this fighting.”
The dialogue also came on the heels of the US Defence Department’s decision to pause deliveries of critical weapon systems to Ukraine, including Patriot missiles and precision-guided artillery rounds.
Kyiv has raised alarms that such delays jeopardize its air defence capabilities and embolden Moscow.
Despite ongoing expressions of frustration regarding Russia's persistent aggression, the Trump administration has yet to implement new sanctions or greenlight additional aid for Ukraine since assuming office in January.
While Russia and Ukraine resumed direct discussions in Istanbul this year, the two rounds of negotiations—held on May 16 and June 2—have resulted in mere prisoner exchanges without any progress toward a ceasefire.
