PM Surya Ghar scheme delivers zero electricity bills in Anantnag, J&K
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Government offices and private consumers in Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir, have begun receiving zero electricity bills following the rollout of the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMB) and the Solarisation Scheme for Government Buildings. According to an official statement issued on Friday, 22 May, the twin solar initiatives are fundamentally reshaping the district's energy landscape and pushing it toward self-reliance.
Scale of Solar Installations So Far
As of the latest figures released by the Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) Anantnag, a total of 2,398 Solar Rooftops (SRTs) have been installed across the district under the PMSGMB Yojana, with a combined capacity of 8.65 MW. Subsidies amounting to ₹17.67 crore have been disbursed among 2,394 beneficiaries.
Under the parallel Solarisation Scheme for Government Buildings, rooftop solar installations have been completed in 242 buildings, adding a capacity of 3,532 kW. The two schemes together represent a significant shift in how both households and public institutions in Anantnag source and manage power.
Who Is Achieving Zero Bills
Among the beneficiaries recording zero electricity bills are several government establishments, including Staff Quarters, Tourist Office Achabal, Manager-Cum-Chemist, Horticulture Office Achabal, and government high schools at Buchoo, Khrity, and Dessu. A growing number of domestic households have similarly eliminated their monthly power costs.
The mechanism enabling this is grid-connected rooftop solar, which allows consumers to generate their own electricity and feed surplus power back into the grid. This net-metering arrangement effectively results in 100 per cent savings on daily power needs for qualifying beneficiaries.
What Officials Said
Senior officials from the district administration and KPDCL noted that the data points to significant untapped potential — both for further reducing household bills and for easing pressure on the conventional power grid. They described the progress as an 'appreciable' step toward energy self-sufficiency in the district.
Authorities have urged remaining household consumers to register for the PMSGMB Yojana through the national portal at consumer.pmsuryaghar.gov.in to access subsidies and secure clean, cost-free power supply.
Broader Context for J&K
Jammu and Kashmir has been among the more active adopters of centrally-sponsored energy schemes, and Anantnag's progress is cited by officials as a model for other districts in the Union Territory. This comes amid a wider national push under the PMSGMB Yojana, which targets 1 crore households across India with free rooftop solar installations. The Anantnag results offer early evidence that the scheme can deliver measurable financial relief at the ground level — particularly in regions where electricity supply has historically been erratic and costly.
With installations still expanding, district officials expect the number of zero-bill consumers to rise further in the coming months.
