Bhuj (Kutch), Aug 18 - With the rising energy demands in contemporary India, solar power is swiftly emerging as a trustworthy and environmentally friendly substitute for conventional energy sources. In the Kutch district of Gujarat, an increasing number of households are adopting rooftop solar panels, thanks to the Prime Minister Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana that commenced on January 23, 2024.
This government-supported initiative is designed to encourage green energy, lessen reliance on coal-based power, and lower electricity expenses for small and medium-income families. Given the region's abundant sunshine, particularly in areas like Kutch and Kathiawar, this solar initiative is demonstrating exceptional effectiveness.
Financial Relief for Families
As part of this scheme, households that install rooftop solar systems up to 3 kW are entitled to a subsidy of Rs 78,000 from the government. With the total cost of a 3 kW system varying between Rs 1.5 lakh and Rs 1.7 lakh, the net investment reduces to approximately Rs 92,000. Over a span of 3.5 to 4 years, this investment is recouped through zero electricity bills, after which beneficiaries can enjoy free electricity for many years.
“Since we installed our 3-kilowatt solar power system, our electricity bill is now zero,” shares Jignaben Parinbhai Thakkar, a resident of Bhuj.
Her solar installation produces around 18 units of electricity daily, from which her household uses only 8–10 units. The excess is fed back into the grid and calculated annually.
“We save about 8 units daily, and at year-end, we earn between Rs 4,000 and Rs 6,000. This amount is directly deposited into our bank account. It’s a tremendous relief,” she expresses with contentment.
Environment-Friendly and Low Maintenance
Solar power not only offers financial savings but also serves as a climate-conscious solution. By opting for solar energy, families contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution, leading to improved air quality and a healthier environment.
“Maintaining it is also surprisingly simple,” Jignaben adds. “We just rinse the panels with water every 15 to 20 days to clear off dust. That’s all it requires.”
Growing Awareness and Future Potential
The state and national governments have been advocating for cleaner energy options for the past four years. Thanks to ongoing awareness campaigns and subsidy assistance, countless households in Kutch have already embraced rooftop solar systems.
In rural areas, farmers are also expressing interest, viewing solar energy as a means to not only reduce expenses but also enhance profits through modern, energy-efficient agricultural practices.
The Prime Minister Surya Ghar Yojana is accessible to eligible citizens via the official website: https://pmsuryaghar.gov.in, where they can apply for installations and monitor subsidies.
As solar energy continues to illuminate homes, lower bills, and fuel ambitions, beneficiaries like Jignaben Thakkar exemplify how well-implemented government schemes can genuinely empower grassroots communities.
