How Are Solar Rooftops Empowering Homes in Kutch Under PM Surya Ghar Yojana?

Bhuj (Kutch), Aug 18 - With the rising energy demands in contemporary India, solar power is swiftly emerging as a trustworthy and environmentally friendly substitute for conventional energy sources. In the Kutch district of Gujarat, an increasing number of households are adopting rooftop solar panels, thanks to the Prime Minister Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana that commenced on January 23, 2024.

Over a span of 3.5 to 4 years, this investment is recouped through zero electricity bills, after which beneficiaries can enjoy free electricity for many years.

“Since we installed our 3-kilowatt solar power system, our electricity bill is now zero,” shares Jignaben Parinbhai Thakkar, a resident of Bhuj.

Her solar installation produces around 18 units of electricity daily, from which her household uses only 8–10 units. The excess is fed back into the grid and calculated annually.

“We save about 8 units daily, and at year-end, we earn between Rs 4,000 and Rs 6,000. This amount is directly deposited into our bank account. It’s a tremendous relief,” she expresses with contentment.

Environment-Friendly and Low Maintenance

Solar power not only offers financial savings but also serves as a climate-conscious solution. By opting for solar energy, families contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution, leading to improved air quality and a healthier environment.

“Maintaining it is also surprisingly simple,” Jignaben adds. “We just rinse the panels with water every 15 to 20 days to clear off dust. That’s all it requires.”
