New Delhi, March 11 (NationPress) PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY) -- the world’s largest domestic rooftop solar initiative -- has reached a remarkable achievement by finalizing 10.09 lakh installations throughout the nation, as reported by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) on Tuesday.
The Ministry highlighted that 45 percent of households in India with solar panels are now enjoying zero electricity bills.
This ambitious initiative, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2024, aims to provide complimentary electricity through rooftop solar setups to one crore residential homes while decreasing reliance on traditional power sources and empowering citizens to become energy producers.
“India has reached a groundbreaking milestone in solar energy! Under the visionary leadership of PM Narendra Modi, the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has empowered 10 lakh homes with solar energy, ushering in a new era of sustainability, affordability, and self-sufficiency,” stated Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, MNRE, in a post on the social media platform X.
“India is accomplishing a unique milestone in renewable energy, showcasing our commitment towards a sustainable energy future,” he added.
The initiative allows every household to play a role in combating climate change by reducing carbon emissions equivalent to planting 100 trees.
The Ministry reported that the PMSGMBY scheme has received 47.3 lakh applications, with 6.13 lakh beneficiaries successfully obtaining subsidies totaling Rs 4,770 crore.
A notable aspect of the scheme is the offering of collateral-free loans through 12 Public Sector Banks (PSBs) at a subsidized interest rate of 6.75 percent for loans of up to Rs. 2 lakhs, making rooftop solar installations more accessible to the general populace.
By March 10, “3.10 lakh loan applications have been submitted, with 1.58 lakh loans sanctioned and 1.28 lakh disbursed, ensuring broader accessibility for potential beneficiaries. Beneficiaries can receive subsidies of up to Rs 78,000 for up to a 3KW rooftop solar system, significantly lowering installation costs,” the Ministry noted.
Leading the way in clean energy adoption are Chandigarh and Daman and Diu, having achieved 100 percent of their government building rooftop solar targets.
Additionally, states like Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu are also making substantial contributions to the overall installation numbers. The government aims to achieve the goal of rooftop solar installations in 1 crore households by 2026-27.
Importantly, the scheme promotes domestic manufacturing by mandating the use of solar modules and cells produced in India.
As of March 10, “the initiative has facilitated the installation of over 3 GW of rooftop solar capacity, with an additional 27 GW targeted by March 2027,” the Ministry reported.
