New Delhi, Jan 15 (NationPress) Major Indian airlines Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet announced on Thursday that they will be adjusting the routes of certain international flights due to the closure of Iranian airspace.
The Iranian government, currently facing significant protests against its Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei amid escalating tensions with the United States, has implemented an abrupt shutdown of its airspace for commercial flights without providing a reason.
Consequently, Air India canceled several early morning flights, including Delhi-New York JFK (AI 101), Delhi-Newark (AI 105), and Mumbai-JFK (AI 119), along with their respective return flights.
IndiGo had to turn back its Baku-Delhi flight to the Azerbaijani capital shortly after takeoff, as it was scheduled to fly over Iran after crossing the Caspian Sea.
In a statement on social media platform X, Air India remarked, "In light of the developing situation in Iran and the subsequent airspace closure, we are rerouting flights that usually overfly the area, which might result in delays."
The airline highlighted that it is also canceling flights where rerouting is not feasible.
IndiGo added, "Given the unexpected airspace closure by Iran, some of our international flights are affected. Our teams are working tirelessly to evaluate the situation and provide affected customers with suitable alternatives."
SpiceJet has issued a similar travel update, linking flight disruptions to the airspace restrictions in Iran.
All airlines have emphasized that the safety of passengers and crew is their highest priority and have urged travelers to verify their flight status on the airline’s website.
Other international carriers, including Lufthansa, are also facing cancellations due to the situation, as they announced adjustments to their flight schedules.
A spokesperson for Lufthansa stated, "In response to the ongoing situation in the Middle East, the Lufthansa Group has decided to operate flights to and from Tel Aviv and Amman as daytime flights from Thursday, January 15, until January 19, 2026. In some instances, flight cancellations may occur, and all Lufthansa group airlines will avoid Iranian and Iraqi airspace until further notice."
In the meantime, the Indian government has advised all its citizens in Iran to leave the country by any available means due to the deteriorating security situation amid massive anti-government protests and crackdowns on demonstrators.
The Ministry of External Affairs issued a strong advisory, urging Indian nationals to avoid traveling to the Islamic Republic of Iran until further notice.
