New Delhi, May 1 (NationPress) Apple experienced a remarkable 28% growth in iPhone shipments in India during the first quarter of this year (January-March), as reported by industry data released on Thursday.

The iPhone 16 series emerged as the top-selling Apple product, securing a significant 54% market share, while the iPhone 15 series captured 36% of the market in Q1 2025, according to CyberMedia Research (CMR).

In terms of tablets, Apple’s iPads recorded an impressive 18% annual growth in Q1 2025 compared to the same period last year.

For the entirety of 2025, projections indicate that iPhones are expected to command an 11% share of the Indian smartphone market, with iPads achieving a 33% share, as Apple continues to focus on local manufacturing.

Apple’s growth trajectory in India remains strong, marked by double-digit year-on-year growth and record-breaking quarterly shipments in Q1.

The iPhone 16 series, primarily driven by the more affordable iPhone 16e, played a crucial role in this growth.

“With nearly three million units shipped in Q1 2025 alone, Apple has reached its best first-quarter performance ever in the Indian market,” stated Prabhu Ram, VP of the Industry Research Group at CMR.

As supply chains are realigned, India is becoming a key hub for iPhone production in the years ahead.

Ram noted that Apple is strategically positioned to maintain this momentum—through expanding local manufacturing of iPhones and other products, and by increasing investment in its retail presence, with plans for more Apple-owned stores.

Concurrently, Apple is leveraging India’s skilled workforce to bolster its broader initiatives in retail, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.

The country is now embracing the ‘Make in India’ initiative on a global scale, with reports suggesting that Apple may transfer the entire assembly of iPhones destined for the US to India by next year. This would represent a significant move in Apple’s global manufacturing strategy as the company seeks to lessen its reliance on China.

Meanwhile, Apple’s contract manufacturers in India are ramping up operations. Foxconn's new facility in Bengaluru is projected to be operational this month and could potentially produce up to 20 million iPhones at full capacity.

Over the past year, iPhones valued at $22 billion have been assembled in India, with Tamil Nadu-based Foxconn accounting for nearly 50% of Apple’s exports.

Point of View

Apple's remarkable growth in India signifies not just the company's strategic advancements, but also the evolving landscape of the Indian tech market. The surge in iPhone shipments reflects a growing consumer preference for quality and innovation. As the nation embraces 'Make in India,' the focus on local manufacturing is pivotal for sustainable economic development. This trend is beneficial for both consumers and the local economy, fostering job creation and technological advancement.
