New Delhi, Oct 19 (NationPress) Osteoporosis poses a significant public health concern; however, it can be effectively addressed through the preventive and restorative practices of Ayurveda, the Ministry of Ayush announced on Sunday.

On the occasion of World Osteoporosis Day 2025, the ministry underscored the necessity of early preventive measures, adequate nutrition, and lifestyle modifications to safeguard bone health and mitigate fracture risks, particularly for the elderly and postmenopausal women.

Referred to as a “silent disease,” osteoporosis compromises bone strength, increasing the likelihood of fractures in the hip, wrist, and spine.

This condition typically progresses gradually, often remaining unnoticed until a bone fracture occurs, resulting in pain and restricted mobility.

Experts indicate that with timely intervention and a healthy lifestyle, the risk of bone deterioration can be substantially diminished.

In Ayurvedic terms, osteoporosis is associated with an imbalance of the ‘Vata dosha’, resulting in weakened bones and decreased density.

This perspective aligns with contemporary science, which links osteoporosis to bone demineralization and age-related hormonal fluctuations.

Prof. Rabinarayan Acharya, Director General of the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), emphasized that Ayurveda offers natural methods to fortify bones and promote healthy aging.

“The classical concept of ‘Asthi Saushirya’ closely parallels modern interpretations of bone fragility,” he noted.

“Ayurveda’s emphasis on prevention through dietary habits, lifestyle adjustments, and herbal treatments presents a comprehensive approach to maintaining bone health,” he elaborated.

He mentioned that CCRAS is conducting scientific research to substantiate Ayurvedic remedies such as ‘Laksha Guggulu’ and ‘Pravala Pishti’ for osteoporosis management.

These studies aim to establish scientific validation for Ayurveda’s efficacy in treating musculoskeletal conditions.

The Ministry of Ayush also advocated for the integration of yoga and moderate exercise into daily routines to enhance flexibility and bolster bone strength.

On World Osteoporosis Day, the ministry urged citizens to adopt Ayurvedic preventive practices, maintain balanced diets, and engage in gentle physical activities.

“By incorporating these holistic strategies into their daily lives, individuals can preserve their bone health, avert fragility, and enjoy a more active and vibrant existence as they age,” the ministry concluded.

Point of View

I find the integration of Ayurveda into modern health practices particularly compelling. The Ministry of Ayush's emphasis on preventive measures and natural remedies highlights a significant shift in how we approach public health challenges like osteoporosis. By combining traditional wisdom with scientific validation, we can empower individuals to take control of their bone health and overall well-being.
