Has the Cabinet Provided Significant Relief to Vodafone Idea by Freezing Rs 87,695 Crore in AGR Dues?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Dec 31 (NationPress) In a substantial relief for the financially burdened Vodafone Idea, the Union Cabinet on Wednesday sanctioned a support initiative that freezes a significant portion of the telecom firm’s adjusted gross revenue (AGR) liabilities.
According to reports, Vodafone Idea’s AGR dues totaling Rs 87,695 crore have been frozen as of December 31.
These dues are not required to be settled immediately; instead, they will be repaid over a prolonged period of 10 years, commencing from the financial year 2031–32 (FY32) and extending until FY41.
The report mentioned that the frozen sum will be reassessed by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) at a future date.
However, this relief is not applicable to AGR obligations related to FY18 and FY19.
These liabilities will remain unchanged and must be settled by Vodafone Idea between FY26 and FY31 as per the current repayment schedule.
As per reports, the frozen AGR dues will be evaluated by the telecom department following Deduction Verification Guidelines and audit findings.
This evaluation process is anticipated to provide Vodafone Idea with some leeway in managing its long-term financial obligations.
A committee appointed by the government will make the final decision on the reassessed figure.
The Cabinet’s action aims to safeguard the government’s almost 49 percent stake in Vodafone Idea, ensure an orderly repayment of dues, maintain competitiveness in the telecom industry, and protect the interests of approximately 20 crore Vodafone Idea subscribers across the nation.
Reports further clarified that the AGR dues for FY18 and FY19 had already been finalized under a 2020 ruling of the Supreme Court of India and, thus, will remain payable without any relief.
Following this announcement, Vodafone Idea shares faced pressure in the market, trading at around Rs 10.8 on the National Stock Exchange (NSE), reflecting a decline of 10.36 percent around 3:05 pm.
