New Delhi, July 29 (NationPress) - On Tuesday, Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia officially introduced the Sanchar Saathi mobile application, which is now available in Hindi and 21 regional languages.
First launched in January 2025, this application provides users with the ability to report suspicious communications, as well as block or trace lost or stolen phones, and verify unauthorized mobile connections.
Accessible on both Android and iOS platforms, this app equips citizens across India with essential multilingual digital safety tools. As per an official statement, approximately 46 lakh users have already downloaded it.
To date, more than 82 lakh fake mobile connections have been terminated, and over 35 lakh lost or stolen phones have been blocked. The initiative has effectively thwarted 1.35 crore spoofed international calls within just 24 hours of the system's launch, resulting in a staggering 97 percent reduction in such calls.
As part of the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) system under Sanchar Saathi, 35.49 lakh lost or stolen devices have been blocked, 21.57 lakh traced, and 5.19 lakh recovered. Currently, Sanchar Saathi collaborates with 620 organizations, including central agencies, state police forces, telecom service providers (TSPs), and GSTN, to create a robust network aimed at combating telecom fraud and cyber threats nationwide.
This citizen-focused digital safety initiative, Sanchar Saathi, integrates advanced technologies such as the Central Equipment Identity Register to block stolen or lost phones, a Digital Intelligence Platform, AI-driven systems to identify connections registered using fake documents, and a Financial Fraud Risk Indicator (FFRI) to detect and prevent potential fraud. It has demonstrated significant progress in safeguarding India’s telecom ecosystem, as stated in the release.
The Sanchar Saathi portal has garnered impressive public engagement, with 16 crore visits and an average of 2 lakh users daily. The AI-powered ASTR tool, along with citizen reports and stakeholder feedback, has successfully disconnected over 4.7 crore mobile connections. The initiative has also resulted in the blocking of 5.1 lakh mobile handsets, the disconnection of 24.46 lakh WhatsApp accounts, and the blacklisting of 20,000 bulk SMS senders involved in fraudulent activities.
In addition, the minister convened with officials from the Department of Telecommunications under the Sanchar Saathi initiative to brainstorm and enhance efforts against telecom-related cyber frauds.
