Coal Production in India Surges by 7.2% to 90.62 Million Tonnes in November

New Delhi, Dec 1 (NationPress) India’s total coal production witnessed a 7.2% surge in November this year, reaching 90.62 million tonnes (MT) compared to 84.52 MT in the same month last year, as reported by the Ministry of Coal on Sunday.

Production from captive and other sources has shown remarkable advancement, climbing to 17.13 MT in November 2024, a significant increase from 12.44 MT in November 2023, reflecting an impressive growth of 37.69%, according to the ministry's statement.

In total, coal production for FY 2024-25 up to November 2024 has reached 628.03 MT, in contrast to 591.32 MT during the same timeframe in FY 2023-24, indicating a growth of 6.21%.

Furthermore, coal dispatches in November 2024 exhibited consistent improvement, achieving 85.22 MT, an increase from 82.07 MT in November 2023, showing a growth of 3.85%. Dispatches from captive and other sources saw a notable rise, reaching 16.58 MT in November 2024 from 13.19 MT in November 2023, marking a remarkable growth of 25.73%.

Cumulatively, coal dispatches for FY 2024-25 up to November 2024 escalated to 657.75 MT, compared to 623.78 MT during the same period in the previous fiscal year, reflecting a growth of 5.45%, as stated by the ministry.

In another development, the ministry successfully auctioned nine mines this week as part of the 10th Round of Commercial Coal Mine Auctions. These mines are projected to generate annual revenue of approximately Rs 1,446 crore (excluding partially explored mines), attract a capital investment of around Rs 2,115 crore, and create 19,063 job opportunities, according to the ministry.

The nine mines collectively hold a geological reserve of about 3,998.73 million tonnes. The total Peak Rated Capacity (PRC) of these mines is 14.10 MTPA, excluding partially explored coal mines, as per the official statement.

Among these coal mines, three are located in Jharkhand, while two each are situated in Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh.

The Ministry of Coal initiated the 10th round of coal mine auctions for commercial mining on June 21, 2024. In this round, a total of nine coal mines were successfully auctioned, comprising three fully explored mines and six partially explored coal mines.
