India Achieves Historic Coal Production of Over 200 Million Tonnes in FY 2025-26
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 2 (NationPress) For the very first time in FY 2025-26, India's captive and commercial coal mines have achieved a remarkable milestone by exceeding the 200 million tonne production threshold, reaching a total of 210.46 million tonnes. This marks a significant increase of 10.22 percent compared to the previous year, as reported by the Ministry of Coal on Thursday.
The government revealed that the dispatches from these coal blocks also set a new record, hitting 204.61 million tonnes, which is up 7.35 percent from 190.42 million tonnes in FY 2024-25.
Last year's production was recorded at 190.95 million tonnes.
During the fiscal year, a total of twelve captive and commercial coal blocks were brought into operation following the approval of mine opening permissions, which contributed over 86 million tonnes of annual production capacity to the existing mining base.
Notably, seven of these blocks began coal production within the same financial year, showcasing enhanced project execution and improved regulatory collaboration.
The ministry emphasized that the record-breaking output reflects better operational efficiency, enhanced logistics, and the growing capability of the sector to meet escalating domestic energy requirements.
The continuous rise in dispatches indicates a more effective coal evacuation process and a more robust supply chain.
India has been progressively increasing its coal production capacity to lessen its reliance on imports.
The introduction of captive and commercial mining, which permits private and governmental entities outside of Coal India to extract coal for personal use or sale, has become a pivotal factor in this initiative since the sector was opened up for commercial mining in 2020.
Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy announced via X that a historic 35 auctioned mineral blocks have been operationalized in FY 2025-26—the highest number in a single financial year.
“With over 200 mineral blocks also auctioned in FY 2025-26, this showcases the government’s commitment to hastening execution and ensuring resources are put into production without delay,” he stated.
The minister further remarked that under PM Narendra Modi’s leadership, reforms such as expedited clearances, effective state coordination, and diligent monitoring have facilitated quicker operationalization.
This development is set to enhance domestic production, decrease import reliance, and create job opportunities, thereby advancing India’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat 2047.
