New Delhi, April 2 (NationPress) The Ministry of Coal announced on Wednesday that coal production soared to 190.95 million tonnes (MT) in the recently concluded financial year (FY25), representing an impressive 29.79 percent growth from the previous fiscal year’s 147.11 MT.

The ministry, in its official statement, highlighted a historic achievement, setting new benchmarks in both captive and commercial coal production along with dispatches for the financial year 2024-25.

Coal dispatches also experienced a significant boost, reaching 190.42 MT, which translates to a 33.36 percent increase from the 142.79 MT documented in FY 2023-24.

According to the ministry, "These remarkable figures demonstrate the sector’s resilience, operational efficiency, and vital role in fulfilling India’s energy demands, propelling industries including power, steel, and cement."

Significantly, captive mines recorded a 24.72 percent increase in production and a 27.76 percent boost in dispatch from the prior year, ensuring a consistent supply to essential industries.

Commercial mines excelled with an astounding 67.32 percent growth in production and an exceptional 76.71 percent rise in dispatch compared to last year, showcasing the expansion and efficiency of India’s coal sector.

These unprecedented accomplishments are a direct reflection of India’s strategic commitment to energy self-sufficiency, bolstering the nation’s stature as a global economic leader.

Furthermore, coal production saw a 1.7 percent increase last month compared to February 2024, with a cumulative index rising by 5.6 percent during the period from April to February 2024-25 compared to the same timeframe in the previous year.

India has surpassed the significant milestone of 1 billion tonnes in coal production. The success of the coal sector is attributed to the relentless efforts of coal Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs), private sector participants, and the dedicated workforce of approximately 500,000 mine workers across more than 350 coal mines.

The country depends on coal for around 55 percent of its energy mix, with approximately 74 percent of the nation’s electricity generated from coal-based power facilities.
