New Delhi, June 2 (NationPress) The total coal production in India for May this year reached 86.24 million tonnes (MT), reflecting a growth of 3.4% compared to the 83.96 MT produced in the same month last year, as stated by the Coal Ministry on Monday.
Production from both captive and commercial mines demonstrated remarkable performance, yielding 16.432 million tonnes (MT) in May 2025, which is a significant 24.57% increase compared to May 2024.
Furthermore, coal dispatch also surged by 13.8%, totaling 17.5 million tonnes (MT) this May, surpassing the figure from May 2024. This dual growth in production and dispatch ensures a reliable coal supply for key industries like power, steel, and cement, according to the official statement.
By May 31, coal stocks held by companies rose by 29.18%, reaching 122.69 MT, compared to 94.98 MT during the same period last year. This increase underscores the substantial rise in coal production across the nation, as noted in the official statement.
In addition, three vital clearances were obtained during May, including Stage-I and Stage-II Forest Clearances and the execution of Mining Leases for various coal blocks, as mentioned in the statement.
Moreover, on May 29, vesting orders for six coal blocks were finalized, located in Chhattisgarh (2), Maharashtra, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh (one each), all part of the 11th tranche of auction.
The government has undertaken several initiatives, such as Commercial Coal Mining and Mission Coking Coal, aimed at boosting domestic coal production and minimizing imports.
These endeavors have contributed to a 7.9% decrease in India’s coal imports, totaling 243.62 million tonnes (MT) during the financial year 2024-25, thanks to enhanced domestic production, which resulted in significant foreign exchange savings of $7.93 billion (Rs 60,681.67 crore) on the import bill, according to official data.
In the previous financial year, coal imports stood at 264.53 MT.
