What the DAC Approved
The DAC, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and India's highest decision-making body on defence procurement, accorded Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for the proposals on Friday. The approvals span a broad range of advanced weapons and surveillance systems, including anti-drone systems, missiles, man-portable anti-tank guided missile (MPATGM) systems, Medium Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MRSAM) weapon systems, very short-range air defence systems (V-SHORADS), kamikaze drones, naval unmanned aerial systems, and high-altitude surveillance platforms.
Why This Matters
The procurement nod comes as India continues to accelerate its defence modernisation drive, with a stated policy emphasis on indigenisation under the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' framework. A significant portion of such acquisitions is routed through domestic defence PSUs, directly benefiting companies like BEL, BDL, and HAL. This is one of the larger single-tranche DAC approvals in recent months, and the breadth of systems — spanning air, land, and naval domains — signals a comprehensive capability upgrade rather than a targeted sectoral buy.
Market Outlook
Analyst attention will now turn to whether these AoN approvals translate into firm contracts and order-book additions for individual PSUs. Historically, the gap between AoN and actual order placement can span several months, meaning near-term earnings impact may be limited. Nonetheless, the approvals reinforce the long-term revenue visibility that has underpinned the defence sector's strong re-rating over the past two years.
