DGCA Implements 48-Hour Cancellation Policy for Airline Tickets and Updates Refund Procedures
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, February 26 (NationPress) - The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has updated its Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR) concerning airline ticket refunds, introducing a 48-hour grace period that permits travelers to cancel or modify their reservations without incurring additional fees.
According to an announcement from the aviation authority, customers can cancel or alter their tickets within 48 hours of booking without facing any extra charges.
However, should passengers wish to change to a different flight, they will need to cover any fare differences that may arise.
This option is only valid if the flight's departure date is at least seven days away for domestic routes and 15 days for international flights.
The benefit applies exclusively to tickets purchased directly from the airline's official website.
The DGCA emphasized that once the 48-hour window has elapsed, standard cancellation fees will be enforced.
The revised guidelines were released on February 24 and will take effect from March 26, 2026.
Additionally, the regulator has established clear directives regarding name corrections and the timelines for refunds.
Airlines are prohibited from charging any fees for correcting passenger names if the error is reported within 24 hours of booking, provided the ticket was obtained directly from the airline’s website.
For tickets purchased through travel agents or online platforms, the airlines bear the responsibility for issuing refunds, as the agents act as their representatives.
The DGCA has mandated that airlines must complete the refund process within 14 working days in such scenarios.
According to the new timelines, refunds for credit card transactions are to be processed within seven days, while cash payments made at the airline’s office should be refunded immediately at that location.
Furthermore, it is now compulsory for airlines to refund all statutory taxes and charges related to passengers in the event of cancellations or no-shows, even if the base fare is non-refundable.
