New Delhi, April 2 (NationPress) The Ministry of Heavy Industries has successfully recorded sales exceeding 13 lakh electric vehicles (EVs) for the recently concluded financial year 2024-25. This accomplishment represents a vital step toward achieving cleaner, greener, and more sustainable mobility, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of reaching ‘Net Zero’ by 2070.
During FY25, 11,49,334 electric two-wheelers (e-2W) were sold, indicating a 21 percent increase from the 9,48,561 units sold in FY24.
Likewise, sales of electric three-wheelers e-3W (L5) hit 1,59,235 units in FY 2024-25, showcasing a remarkable 57 percent growth compared to the 1,01,581 units sold in the previous financial year, as reported by the Ministry of Heavy Industries.
The ministry introduced the PM E-DRIVE Scheme in September of last year to boost green mobility and foster the development of the EV manufacturing ecosystem in the nation.
This initiative has an allocated budget of Rs 10,900 crore for a duration of two years, concluding on 31.03.2026.
The Electric Mobility Promotion Scheme (EMPS) 2024, executed by the Ministry for a six-month period from 01.04.2024 to 30.09.2024, is incorporated within the PM E-DRIVE scheme.
“Under the PM E-DRIVE scheme in FY 2024-25, 10,10,101 e-2W and 1,22,982 e-3W (L5) have been registered in the VAHAN portal. More than one million EVs have been sold in this fiscal year 2024-25,” the ministry reported.
“Under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is spearheading the global shift towards sustainable mobility. The sale of over 1 million EVs stands as a proof of the success of MHI’s flagship initiatives including FAME, EMPS, and PM E-DRIVE. This achievement reinforces our dedication to creating a cleaner, greener, and self-sufficient India,” stated Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, H.D. Kumaraswamy.
The production-linked incentive (PLI) Auto scheme is revolutionizing India's automotive industry by encouraging sustainable and advanced manufacturing.
In this framework, 18 original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) have submitted applications, playing a pivotal role in propelling the electric mobility revolution and fortifying the nation’s transition towards a self-reliant and future-ready automotive ecosystem.
India's e-mobility sector is gaining traction, spurred by government initiatives, technological innovations, and environmental awareness.
