New Delhi, Aug 9 (NationPress) In alignment with PM Narendra Modi's vision of 'Minimum Government, Maximum Governance', the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has emerged as a pivotal element of transparency, inclusivity, and efficiency, stated Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on Saturday, celebrating the successful nine-year journey of this digital governance initiative.
"Kudos to @GeM_India for achieving nine years as one of India's most significant digital governance projects," Goyal shared on his official 'X' account.
The minister highlighted that the platform has already surpassed Rs 1.52 lakh crore in transaction value for FY 2025-26 to date, with a total procurement exceeding Rs 14.91 lakh crore across 3 crore orders.
The GeM initiative plays a vital role in supporting marginalized seller groups and individuals with disabilities.
"It has actively promoted the participation of marginalized and underrepresented seller groups, including MSEs, women entrepreneurs, self-help groups (SHGs), tribal artisans, startups, weavers, and divyangjan," the minister noted.
To foster decentralized digital procurement, GeM has been integrated with the e-Gram Swaraj portal, allowing panchayats to procure goods and services, according to the minister.
As Goyal pointed out, the scheme's growth trajectory signifies not only numerical growth but a profound impact that is empowering local communities, enabling cost-effective procurement, and bolstering Atmanirbhar Bharat.
GeM recorded a gross merchandise value (GMV) of Rs 5.4 lakh crore in FY 2024–25, as per the Ministry of Commerce.
Over the past nine years, GeM has achieved remarkable milestones, onboarding 1.5 lakh women-led enterprises alongside startups, self-help groups (SHGs), artisans, and micro and small enterprises (MSEs).
“Our commitment is to ensure that every enterprise, from tribal artisans to tech-savvy startups, has seamless access to public procurement opportunities,” said Mihir Kumar, Chief Executive Officer of GeM.
The platform has diversified into new service areas including insurance, manpower, and Mine Development and Operations (MDOs), implemented technology-driven procurement processes for faster and more cost-effective transactions, and provided training and onboarding support to state governments, public sector projects, and local bodies.
Launched in 2016 to encourage open, inclusive, and effective public procurement, GeM has transformed into a digital procurement ecosystem that connects vendors and service providers nationwide, encompassing Divyangjans, SHGs, women entrepreneurs, startups, MSEs, and artisans.
